Bassirou is an Associate Professor in Bacteriology and Virology at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the University Clinical Research Center (UCRC) – University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB). After completing his MD in Bamako, he did an MSc at Nagasaki University in Japan, before enrolling for the PhD programme at the University of Antwerp in Belgium. His PhD focused on the rapid means of early detection of DR-TB in new and previously treated patients. His main research interests include antimicrobial resistance, molecular and clinical microbiology diagnosis, transmission dynamics, and immune response to TB other infectious diseases.
In 2020, Bassirou was selected by the African Association for Antimicrobial Resistance (AAARAM) as the Best Young Francophone in Antimicrobial Resistance Research. Currently, he is a member of the European Society of Mycobacteriology, the International Union of TB and Lung Diseases, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and a pioneer of AAARAM, and the Malian Societies of Pneumology, and Infectious and Tropical Diseases.
