Dr Melisa Martinez-Alvarez is a health economist with 15 years’ experience in conducting research in low- and middle-income countries. She has been at the MRC Unit The Gambia since 2018, where she is the lead social scientist. Melisa is based in Senegal, where she coordinates a research collaboration with the Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar and the Institut de Recherche en Santé de Surveillance Epidemiologique et de Formation (IRESSF).
Her research interests include health systems financing, human resources for health, maternal and new-born health, sexual and reproductive health, migration and pandemics.
She holds a BSc from Imperial College London, an MSc and a PhD from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
